Selecting any shape in image

Hi.
I have an image, for example :
http://static.asiawebdirect.com/m/phuket/hotels/phuket-com/sheraton/rooms/hotelBanner/rooms00.jpg.
I would like to select any object in this room like painting on the wall or
table, via marking edges of the object, i mean like pencil or brush in MS
paint. And copy the selected area or at least know indicies of the selected
objects. I know there is function imcrop and it works fine, but i can only
select rectangles. Do i need to write my own brush(maybe there are already
writen free ones?), or can it be done by edge or shape detecion alghoritms,
maybe segmentation? Am i missing a point here?
