Metaverse Programming Books?

Greetings,

Can anyone suggest a book as a starting point for someone interested
in coding metaverse-like environments? To give an idea of my skill
level, I've worked with PHP for a few years. Some postgreSQL, bash,
very slight amount of perl, sed, awk. So "fairly noobish" but not
"utterly ignorant of programming constructs, methodology," etc.

And I'm running OS X 10.4.10.
