ATM does two jobs now:
1. Displaying type 1 fonts on screen/printing them to non-PostScript
printers.
2. ATM Deluxe is a font manager.

Although there are other font managers (2), I don't believe it's
likely you'll ever find an alternative for (1). There's little point
trying to create a commercial rival while the basic ATM (without font
management) is virtually given away e.g. you get it if you buy any
Adobe font, I believe. Do make sure you are using at least version
3.02 in Windows 95.

Font-O-Matic by Qualitype; reviewed in the Nov 5, 96 issue of PC Magazine. This
caught my eye too when I read it, so I snipped & saved the article. The
reviewer states " ... in general, Qualitype's features are more flexible and
extensive". ATM does need to be installed, though, for Type 1's. I don't know
anything about the product firsthand.

AFAIK the Deluxe version, which is not given away, is the only version of
ATM that permits on-screen display of Type 1 (and Multiple Master) fonts
under MS Windows NT. ATM 3.02 can be installed, but it does little more
than shuffle files from one directory to another.

*Virtually* given away, yes. If you buy Type 1 fonts from anyone
other than Adobe, you *must* also buy Type On Call (with free ATM) if
you want to see those fonts on screen. (Well, you don't have to buy
Type On Call per se; you can buy ATM for the same price - which comes
free with Type On Call. Whatever.)

True, Type On Call gives the first 30 unlocks free, but if I needed
any of those fonts, I would have bought the CD anyway!

I'm not expecting Adobe to give me something for nothing. But I'd
like to be able to buy only what I need for a reasonable price.

In the past 12 months I have read some reviews (problably in BYTE or PC
magazine) of an alternative (commercial) product to Adobe Type Manager
that is supposed to do a better job than ATM. I need to incorporate
Adobe type 1 fonts and True Type fonts in the same document. Win95.
Anyone knwo the product I'm talking about who makes/sells it
(internationally)?

Thanks best wishes,
James Macdougall.

James;
I recall a review of a commercial font manager for TrueType and PostScript
Type 1 that PC Mag thought offered some advantages over ATM's features. I
could be mistaken, but I recall the preference was connected to font
substitution or auto-load features but, again, I could be mistaken. I any
event, this product required that ATM be installed if PostScript fonts were
to be used. It did not have a rasterizer (to render the fonts). Of course,
since I don't see every PC Mag or Byte issue, there could easily be some
other product I missed.

Hope this is of some help. Good luck in your search.

Download a copy Typograf font manager from www.neuber.com. It's the last word
in font management. Bye now.

ATM for Win (without the control panel) is included with earlier
versions (2, I believe) of Acrobat reader (free). You can use one of
the several 3rd party, shareware font managers to do the font
installation. Rajeev Karunakaran meantions this in his docs for his
freeware drawing programme, "PageDraw", and has a link to it on his
home page (which I don't have to hand).

Check out FontScope at http://www.curvesoft.com . It is a Type 1
font rasterizer library that is sold for a modest price ($39.95
+ S/H) and comes with full ANSI C sources. It handles Multiple
Master fonts as well -- including recent ones like Kepler and
Jenson that compute the WeightVector in unusual ways.
