Hey all,

Just for the hell of it, I've been trying to track down that font that TSR
used to use for the lettering in "DUNGEONS & DRAGONS". You fellow
old-timers know the one I mean. From the old Red Box set, the one that used
to be on the old gold AD&D character sheets, etc. Kind of like saloon
lettering...

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Ciao,
Patrick

IIRC, that font is called "Soutane". I used to have it somewhere, but don't know
which disk it's on or if it's legal to distribute as shareware. I'll see if I
can dig it up to confirm the name and it's distribution vendor/status.

Is this the one you're looking for? TSR did use this one at one point, but I
don't know if it's the one on the red box:

http://masterstech-home.com/The_Library/Font_Samples/Font_Indices/Image_Pages/S/
Soutane.html

It is shareware and it's a free download, but it's in Mac format. If you're
using Windows, go to the site's main page and download their Mac to Windows font
converter. Should work. I can't find my Windows version of the files anywhere.
Looks like my disks are sprouting legs again.

- TBD

You da man for trying to help me with this, you know.

But that font (which is the same as Souvienne/Souvenir/other names) is the
font that they used for the body text, and I was more interested in the
actual title letting for "DUNGEONS & DRAGONS".

It's the same one they used on the old 1st Edition Player's Handbook, DMG,
etc., except those of course say "ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS". AFAIK, TSR
only used it for the titles and didn't use it anywhere else in their books.

I have a scanned image of it if anyone thinks it'll help them ID it.

Thanks,

according to a previous thread on this ng, that font is called subway regular.

Hmm, I looked at a "Subway" by FontHaus, and it looks kinda like the
reprints of the 1st edition books (I think, I never owned one with this
type), but not the font from the original 1st edition Player's Handbook, for
example, which has the demonic-looking statue on it (and that's the one I'm
looking for). Do you happen to know if "Subway Regular" is a different
font, or better yet, which foundry produces it?

Thanks in advance,

Nothing I love better than answering my own posts. Several times. :^)

Anyway, I found it. For the record, the font that TSR used to use for the
D&D title lettering was an outlined version of "Woodtype" by URW.

I hope to make a "what font was that?" for RPGs available on my web site
soon. Contributions will be most welcome...

Try posting your scanned sample to alt.binaries.fonts. Somebody
may be able to ID it for you.
