Hey :) I'm hoping to find a common font or fonts closest to Galliard;
I used it in the logo on http://mail.alanhogan.com/ and was hoping to
use something close to it for the page headings. Right now, that's
Georgia, but Georgia is too fat and inelegant (though I usually love
it on screen). Any ideas?

Scripsit {ajh}:

I think it's somewhat odd to use a serif font for a heading and sans-serif
font for copy text. Rather the opposite would be normal, though newspapers
often use serif fonts for both. On web pages, serif fonts in large sizes
make a strange appearance. Note that headings are by default bold, and this
strengthens the effect, as does the gross font size difference.

Galliard seems to have rather strong variation in thickness, and I wonder
_why_ you would want to imitate that font in headings. But which common
fonts did you try? Garamond might have similar properties without the
overall "fatness" (large basic thickness in large sizes).
