WhatTheFont and Identifont don't come up with anything close. Google does
not provide any clear suggestions other than Albertus, which it patently is
not.
TIA
Chris
It's Univers Condensed (some semiboldish weight) - the G is a
giveaway.

A discussion thread in Creative Bits (found with google, by the way)
includes the following possibilities. I haven't checked them out.
http://creativebits.org/london_street_signs_font
FF Govan 1
Univers Bold Condensed (as indicated by Andreas, too)
Grotesque Extra Condensed
and this article

hope it helps ...
Thanks guys for your help, much appreciated.

Nice assortment of wild guesses ;-)))
> FF Govan 1
> Grotesque Extra Condensed
and not to forget: Trade Gothic was suggested as well.

Which is about older street sign lettering. The most promising
link on that site http://www.publiclettering.org.uk/Streetnames.php
unfortunately leads to a 403 error. My money is still on Univers, even
though they may have some "company" font based on it but with minimal
changes - the Univers design is too old to be protected, even in Europe.
Anyone can make their own unless they want to call it "Univers" :-)
