I would like to introduce Castcraft Software's OptiFonts Web Page.
Casctraft software offers 5,000 typestyles in PostScript(R) and
TrueType(R) formats for Mac and IBM. Designer Packages, CDROMs,
and individual fonts are available.

Castcraft Software has a library of over 25,000 typestyles and will
produce any font in MAC or IBM formats, PostScript or TrueType. All
fonts are "Kustom-Kerned(tm)" with between 1,200 to 2,500 kerning
pairs depending on type style. All OptiFonts include complete character
sets with Spanish, Italian, French, German, Scandinavian, and Portuguese
accented composites included with each font.

The Web site features complete showings of over 5,000 high quality
Designer Type Faces available in all formats with online ordering.

Web Address: http://www.castcraft-software.com/
================================================

Castcraft has a "Custom Corporate Type Face Division" created to produce
any special, custom, or corporate font needed at reasonable prices and in
the shortest turn around time in the industry.

In addition the entire one-of-a-kind "Solotype Alphabets" collection has been
exclusively licensed making it available for the first time for PostScript
and TrueType printers and computers.

Hmmm. A start, I suppose. No email address that I could see for
general enquiries. And fonts will be sent snail mail!? (I'm in UK)
Come on - font vendors: let us have online ordering to anywhere in the
world at any time of day or night & give us the facility to download
them! Letraset have said they plan to do this, Jasc Inc. have said
they plan to do this (not fonts, other s/w). Forte already do this.

Locked CD roms I thought were great when they first arrived. Now I
hardly ever use them. The vendor has to be open for business :(
Then you're at the mercy of the fax machine & its operator. First time
I tried to unlock from Adobe in Amsterdam it took about four hours in
total and umpteen phone & fax calls to get the unlock codes which they
kept sending incorrectly!! I've had failures from Linotype & Monotype
CDs also. AND CDs are static - in theory I believe even font software
gets upgraded (?). The internet is here now - global comms, global
village etc. etc. If I need a particular font at 2 a.m. I should be
able to get it! If I can send flowers to my grannie in Australia why
can't I buy fonts?

AND at a universal price?! $19 (19 US dollars) plus transaction
charges still works out about half the usual cheapest price in UK.
I believe people in AUS & NZ suffer the same kind of thing?
OK so maybe not many (normal) folk work at 2 a.m. but in UK most firms
shut shop at 5 or 6 p.m. and I know lots of type oriented workers
carry on long past *then*. So what happens when I need this face
"after hours"? I either make do with one I've got or download some
shareware/pd face. Either way, the commercial font vendors lose out!

Come on Adobe, Bitstream, Monotype et al -- a lot of font consumers
are *not* techie-computer freaks (all-too-tolerant of inept software:
would you buy a car that performed the way most s/w and os does?) , we
want a service!

This site (http://www.castcraft-software.com/) is impressive.
Although advertising led me there, it is good to know about it. Even the
printout of a (short, partial) font directory is reasonably indicative --
to judge from the specimens of the Opti Planet family's resemblance to
Plantin.

...and Option's resemblance to Optima. Yeah, it's mostly knock-offs and
clones. Anyone know what the quality's like? $200 is pretty out-of-line if
they're just run-of-the-mill clones, and for the supposed list price of $1000
you could buy a hell of a lot of type, even from a top foundry.

They're all clones, and from what I've seen the quality is
*****diabolical*****, really!

Their UK rep's claim to corporate fame was, "we can make a font in three hours".

My sincere recommendation is:

*Everyone* go out and buy the complete OptiFont Library, you'll never
complain about paying $30.00 for a single font ever again.

I don't think I could adequately reply to your "rant" in one message.
I think alot of your comments are justifiable. We are doing our best
to build a Web site that will function and service customers in just
the fashion you are looking for. There are many, many issues to address.
I mainly wanted to acknowledge that I read your message and have noted
your comments. They have not fallen on deaf ears.

At Bitstream, we are also trying to build a Web suite that will
provide the kinds of services mentioned in the original message.

In fact, I sent a copy of the message to our Web site manager.

Watch our site for future developments!
