I've just installed wine under linux mint 11, mostly to run a program
called brewater. This installed OK under wine but when I run it a
window entry ('starting brewater 3.0') appears at the bottom of the
screen for about 15 sec and then disappears but the window itself
doesn't appear. If I start it in a terminal, after 1 second it says
"Could not load 'VBRUN300.DLL' required by 'BREWATER', error=2" and
then finishes. This dll is in the .wine/drive_c/windows/system23
directory and is the same one that is in the windows partition of the
drive. What can I do? Thanks in advance for any help.

Try dropping a link to the dll in the same directory as the program:
cd path/to/brewater
ln ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/vbrun300.dll

Thanks, Auric. That did the trick, at least after I discovered that I
had to use capital letters for the dll! Now, alas, trying to run the
program results in an error 'unhandled exception: denormal float
operand in 32-bit code' with a long list of stuff in the terminal. It
seems that this is bug 24084 so I suppose that I'm stuck until it gets
fixed!! I'm using wine 1.2.3 - would getting the latest development
version be an idea? Thanks.

That's for you to decide. (I'm using 1.3.32 here.) I don't know if the issue
is fixed or not; I don't use any Win16 apps under Wine. (For that matter, I
don't use very many Win32 apps either.)

A quick test with a known-working (under Win16) game gives me a crash, but
not the one you got (a page fault in my case). Shrug.

Good to hear. Certainly not what I expected, so all the more better.
