I'm running Slackware 3.6, upgraded to kernel 2.2.3; Wine v. 990508
built without incident. No Windoze, C:\Windows exists as mounted
partition under /wine. I'm relying on built-in DLLs only.

Now for the fun part:
My son, 4 yrs. old, uncorrupted by M$, needs good ole Creative Wonders
Elmo's Reading installed on my Linux box. The Install Wizard attempts
to load from CD, and crashes. Here's the command line and debug
listing...

Please let me know if other relevant info is needed; thanks in advance.

Are you sure you haven't loaded kernel32 natively?

Win32s, what else...

[other things]

You installed Win32s as you thought that its DLLs would help you.
And OLE32.DLL is the Win32s version of the OLE32 DLL.
And of course it needs to use Win32s functionality which isn't
automatically used in Wine -> it bombs.
Remove the Win32s things from Wine access or try
wine "win32s.exe app.exe"
Believe me; I know it for sure.

Rerun with -dll ole32=b added to the command line.

That was, as Clinton might say, a 'mis-statement.'

Yep, I polluted my wine/windows/system with stuff I thought might work.  Didn't turn off default win DLLs... (Unbelievable what comes on game CDs; everything from sol.exe to IE -- shudder.)

Bertho also pointed out another one:

This another problem.

So, with mea culpas aside...  I get the following output with the same command line as previously,

bash# wine -debugmsg +module,+file +relay setup.exe

with no crash, just a blantant objection that the installer...

    Cannot open input source
    Current File: ELMOREAD.ICO

I suspect the following snip from below may offer clues... any idea what the heck WING32 is?

trace:file:LZOpenFileA (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WING32.DLL,0x40ebdc18,0)

warn:file:FILE_DoOpenFile (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WING32.DLL): return = HFI

Again, thanks in advance for your patience with the ignorance of others.

WinG is an API, designed for Windows 3.x, for enabling fast double-buffering
with DIBs, mostly for games and such. (It has later been superseded by both
DIBSections, which is part of standard win32 API, and of course DirectX.)

WinG32 is the WinG thunking layer for win32s apps, mostly.

The 16-bit WinG is implemented in Wine, and since the win32s Universal Thunks
are implemented now too, maybe the original wing32.dll (should come with the
WinG SDK etc, available from Microsoft FTP servers) will work with Wine.
