Wine windows won't draw

I'm posting here because no wine window will ever pop on my station
(Gentoo 64-bits, with kernel 2.6.31-r1)
When I run "wine notepad" : a window would pop up, but only its borders
would be drawn. The contents remains transparent, showing the
background, or whatever other window was behind.
When I run "winecfg", nothing happens. Sometimes the console would start
to log what I think are normal wine logs.
I've tried with and without compiz, and I tried recompiling (emerging)
wine many times, with xcomposite on and off, no changes. Even
reinstalling gentoo wouldn't make a difference.

The graphic card I'm running is :
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series
Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
with module "intel".
I'm a bit disappointed because I was told Wine uses pure X library to
draw its window.
Any idea ?

No, I've never tried.
I considered emulating a 32-bit OS, but it would have too many device
differences : is there a point ?
Or I can try and have a little 32-bit OS on a usb device to make some
tests. I'll keep you posted on this.
Meanwhile, if you think of any other test to perform so as to grasp where
this could be from, I'm listening ;)

Right. What architecture are you on?
It might be a problem with the graphics driver for your particular
architecture, or it might be a problem with the application that you are
trying to run.
I know that wine works on a 32 bit IBM compatible computer fitted with
an Intel graphics chipset using open source drivers.

Depending on your architecture, you might be able to try from an Ubuntu
livecd.

My architecture :
well I'm running on a laptop Aspire 5738Z.
Its proc is a Core2Duo T4200.
You already know that the graphic chipset is
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series
Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07).
It has 4gb of RAM, which I hope is enough to install wine on.
This LiveCD idea is not bad at all, I'm planning to go and download one.
By the way, I can't think of an architecture that wouldn't support Ubuntu
32-bits LiveCD. Or is it like Solaris ?
I'll keep you posted with Ubuntu live cd results.

I've ended up burning a 64-bits Ubuntu Live-CD, and ... it worked like a
charm. I'm not sure what to do next. Any idea ?
