I just tried NESticle for the first time. I was a bit leery of an April
Fool's joke, mainly due to the silly name... here are my comments:

1. The interface is great. DOS and Windows '95 versions of the program
make it a joy to use.
2. Speed is excellent
3. Sound is very good... far superior to Pasofami and iNES

Some minor problems:

1. Weird graphics in a few games. I would say 60% of the ROMs I have
tried worked very well.
2. When I change resolutions, the palette changes to weird colours, making
it impossible to read menu choices.
3. Resolution default is not saved when I select "Save Config"

This is a very impressive emulator. I would be much more willing to shell
out $35 for this product over iNES any day of the week. I know that Marat
had quite a bit of input on this product (according to the DOC)... it is
simply superior in almost every way.

I am hoping that the author of NESticle will continue to update the
product.

Good work!

Yeah, except for the somtimes scratchy, wierd sounds and occasional
graphics problem, this is a pretty good emulator. I think the thing I
like most about the emulator is that it runs in DOS and Win95. I used
to play NESA almost exclusivly because it ran in DOS, but this one is
faster and plays about 85% of the ROMs that I tried with it. It is
really good with 1942 and 1943 also. iNES, Paso, and NESA have some
problems with these games, but NESticle does a pretty good job of
running them.

Can anyone tell me a way to get the sound to sound REAL? I can't stop
it from sounding scratchy and jagged. I run Win95 version if that
helps.

thanx in advance

I think this emulator is a great piece of work.

Just as a matter of interest, NESA is speed locked - e.g. it runs at an equivalent
frame rate of 55fps (e.g. 3 frames per clock tick) irrespective of the machine its
being run on. It can actually go a fair bit quicker than this. Going much over
emulation speed makes games unplayable... I don't know why I didn't put a
variable speed option in NESA.

Also, some of the speed may be generated by increasing the effective frame sync
rate - if the game spends time waiting for access to the PPU to become available,
or waiting for the next frame sync this will give an 'imaginary' speed improvement.
I'd love to see the code for this emu to see what techniques he is using - is he
caching the tiles in display format ....

Top Gun and CastleVania 3 do not work.

Get the .21 version that is available from the homepage. I had problems
with scratchy sound in Super Mario Bros., etc. With the latest .21, the
buffers for sound have been increased, etc. The sound in now nice and
clean, at least for me on my P120.

For Rainbow Island, press the 'f' key to 'mirror flip'. It works.

Two things :

1) The Windows'95 sound of nesticle isn't very bad... But i get no sound
under DOS whatoever.... is it because i'm using irq 10 for my
soundblaster 16 ??? (and yes i DO have the blaster-var. set !)

2) Will NESA ever be updated ?

Ok Bye

100InOne carts uses a special mapper. I think it's only supported by iNES
so far.

Probably..Most software needs irq5-dma1 to work correctly. And either
nesticle or your system will have to change to get sound :-)

For Rainbow Island you have to do a mirror flip (f) to get it to work.

Try setting the soundblaster with the NESticle program (read the docs).
It will be worth it, as the DOS sound is rather good. Or just use
DIAGNOSE to set your IRQ to 5.

Apparently so, but it doesn`t matter any more. NESticle rules. Mario 3
is completely excellent on it, and we don`t have to pay through the nose
to play it either.

Haven't tried the others, but Goonies works great for me. Out of all
the emulators out there, this one even managed to finally get the
bombs/Goonies rescued etc display (top left corner) to stay
unglitched! And Gradius's rocky surfaces seem to scroll real good too!
Way to go!

Add Contra Force to your list too, it just spits up a bunch of garbage

Nesticle is awesome, and works with the majority of carts it
seems, and good old zelda is just about perfect.

I've tested with about 50 carts, and find the following problems.

---------------------------

My metroid.nes cart causes the message :

Unrecognized op-code F at addr: 8F5C

(although i can't currently test this with another emu, my ines is on
another machine.)

---------------------------
Bart vs. the Space Mutants seems to kill nesticle, bumps
back out to win95.
---------------------------
TMNT2I bombs with the message :

Unrecognized op-code 82 at addr: 81BF
---------------------------
Zelda II is graphically challenged to the point of being unplayable.

---------------------------

Mapper #8 isn't yet supported, so a few games (Doraemon etc..)
aren't there yet.

That's about all the problems I can find so far. Hope this feedback
helps.

Pooyan and Soccer also work with mirror flip, as do at least a dozen other
games I've tried today. If something screws up, always try hitting f then e
(for a reset) and see if it helps.

RoadBlasters works for me somewhat with iNES 0.6 for Unix/X. There are
scrolling mixups with the graphics near the dashboard at the bottom. I
don't know how it runs under any version of iNES for Windows.

(With the same cartridge image--which bars mucked-up header problems--it
doesn't work for me under DOS Nesticle, though.)

since I posted the list and several add-ons as ive tried each ROM.
could I just say this....

I have had several E's from peeps who have had roms working that I can't,
I can only put this down to the PC it is run on..
mines a 166mmx, 48meg, 2meg s3 grafix and sb 16...

so I shan't after all be creating a list of what and what does not work on
this truly exlint emulator...
you can if you wish visit my home page and view what I have already had
running from the off with no mirror options etc..

http://www.source.co.uk/users/mduell/

I can only but hope that over time and with each rev, the genius/es behind
NESticle (I want to have their babeeez) will solve any problems...

I just wanted to say...I have tried my metroid.nes cart and it works fine
under NESticle. If you would like me to I would send you the rom (since I
assume you already own it).

What? You don't believe me? Well, you can't blame a guy for trying.

It is a brilliant emulator nonetheless.
