Hi all,
In Pac-Man's DIP switch settings, you can use "alternate" names
for the ghosts. When I do that, the names come up as:

AAAAAAAA "BBBBBBBB"
CCCCCCCC "DDDDDDDD" etc.

Is there any way to actually change the names of the ghosts?

Sure. Just modify the rom files with a hex editor. Even a text
editor should do.

I don't think this will work as the ROMS are checksummed. You need to
modify the Pac Man driver to rewrite the RAM after the game is running
(or disable/fool the checksum). Find the address where the names are
stored, make a call to RAM[0xwhatever]=whatever. I think this is how the
high score table is restored.

I'm sure any gurus reading this will correct me. Yes, I realize I know
little more than diddly-squat.

Check out alt.hackers for an account from a guy who did just this for
infinite lives and changing maze sequences. It's still on DejaNews.
Search for "Pacman hacks".

Yes, why not.
You just need a hex editor. The names are in Rom: Pacman.6j.

Mame will display a wrong checksum, but that's no problem. You can
still play the game.

If you send me the names/nicknames you want in it. I can do it for
you. It takes about 3 minutes. No problem
