I am looking for a text adventure game called "Haunted House" written
in BASIC for the C64 in the early 80s (I believe).
Anybody who knows this game? Comments and questions welcome.
Cheers,
Martin
I know of a few different ones.
One was an Interactive-Fiction-styled one written by Joe Garrett
(requiescat in pace) and published by _Loadstar_ disk-magazine. Had a
fading-in-and-out title screen. Main part of the game was light green
text on dark grey background.
Another was styled after pick-a-path books. It was one-half of a
two-game collection sold by Scholastic Books through their school book
club. Had silly illustrations and an even sillier plotline. Alas, I
haven't been able to find a copy of it.
Do either of these ring any bells?

I think I know this one but unfortunately it's not the game I'm
looking for. I remember "Haunted House" to be a pure text adventure
with light blue text on dark blue background (C64 standard colors).

The "Haunted House" I mean didn't have any illustrations. I don't
remember much of the plot but I do remember that you could find a
wooden cross in the alcove and a coffin in the cellar.
I would love to play that game again after nearly 20 years.

Well, finally I found the C64 text adventure I was looking for. The
title is "Haunted Mansion" by John O'Hare (1980). Please let me know
if you want me to send you the T64 tape archive.

If you solve the game, I'd be interested in the Solution for
http://solutions.c64.org/. :-)
I do believe I've found a copy on http://www.ifarchive.org/ , but
thanks for the offer. :)
Now I'm wondering whether anyone knows whether there are any C64
versions on the Net to be found of a text adventure "The House of Seven
Gables". Long long ago it was one of the public domain programs that
Commodore Canada polished off and added a semi-standardised menu (you
know, "Student Instructions", "Teacher Instructions"...) to. This looks
like it:
http://www.wurb.com/if/game/281
but it's for the TRS-80. Now, if anyone knows where I could find a
TRS-80 Basic detokeniser... ;)
Does anyone remember a haunted house game that featured a demented
professor and his nurse-wife? As I recall, these kids snuck their way
into a big old house, and had to evade capture by hiding and
uncracking codes etc... I remember a big green blob that locked me up
the basement, and a swimming pool that if left empty, would cause the
mansion to explode, ending the game.. My God it's been YEARS since I
played that game, and would like to play it again but I'll be darned
if I can remember what the title of the game was... Does this ring a
bell with anyone? Thanks
Brad.

YES! That was it! THANK-YOU. It was driving me crazy trying to
remember the title. It was one of the first games I got when my
parents bought me a C64 for Christmas 1988. I haven't had a 64 since
1995, when I bought my first PC. I sold the old Commodore and
everything with it, 1541 drive, monitor, datasette(which I don't
miss-lol), joysticks, over 30 cartridges, 200 disks, etc... The whole
thing went for $100, which I thought wasn't too bad. Some of the
other games I recall are Flight Simulator II by Bruce Artwick,
California Games, Test Drive, Wheel of Fortune, the usual arcade
games, chopper rescue, and lots of other good stuff. I'd sure like to
play some of these again, just to bring back some memories. Do you
know of any good sites that feature these classics converted for PC
use? Many thanks again for your reply. It sure feels good taking a
trip down memory lane. LOL.
Brad.
Alternatively some of the classic C64 games were also released for PCs. I
know Maniac Mansion was but I still prefer the emulated verions. There is
one exception though Defender of the Crown. They have recently made a new
implementation of it for the PC with improved graphics, sound etc. Very nice
indeed and you get disk/tape images of the original games for a variety of
8bit platforms :-)
