It has been announced that Google Groups will no longer upload to Usenet groups.

"Starting on February 22, 2024, you can no longer use Google Groups (at groups.google.com) to post content to Usenet groups, subscribe to Usenet groups, or view new Usenet content. You can continue to view and search for historical Usenet content posted before February 22, 2024 on Google Groups."

Then I would like to invite everyone to meet me over on Atariage. It is a way better forum anyways that allows one to post files, pictures and videos.

And a way better editor for entering posts. No checking off that you are not a bot. And the best of all, NO SPAM.

As many of us do, use an NNTP server, and unhook from google right now.

I occasionally drop into the AtariAge forums, but not too often. It is
too bad the Apple II forums are dwindling, but it does go with the territory.

If I am not mistaken, you are still afflicted by spam, are you not?
And what about the ability to upload pictures/data/videos on NNTP servers? I am unfamiliar with this mode of communicatio and will have to look more into newsreaders.

I dropped AtariAge like a bad habit as soon as Nutari bought them out.
Whatever promises they may have made that they'll leave the forums be I
don't for one second believe.

I use Eternal September as my primary means of access and MacGUI as my
secondary. Google was my tertiary.

Eternal September is great and it's free.

I'm still trying to find a news reader that I like. I'm using Claws
Mail right now. It works pretty good, but it just seems kind of clunky.

http://www.eternal-september.org/ is filtering out the spam for me.

Rob,

Actually, until just recently (and thankfully none today), SPAM hasn't
been an issue for me.

As for a newsreader -- On both a Mac and Windows, I've been using the
one built into the Mozilla Thunderbird email program. It's just like
having another email box -- just choose the groups to which you wish to
subscribe (I've got 5) and read the messages just like new emails.
Responses are the same.

It's nothing fancy, but then, neither am I.

You know the horror story that ends with "The calls are coming from inside
the house"?

Spoiler alert: the spam is coming from Google.

It must mean Google finally cleaned up their act as I haven't seen SPAM for a couple of days now, if it is where the SPAM was coming from. But I have been constantly reporting everything as well. Which may also be the reason for the sudden turn of events.

I really like Atariage's ability to embed files, graphics and videos right into the posts.
Although Google didn't say they were shutting the doors on the forums, but just disconnecting from Usenet, it is still not as nice as a standalone forum as Atariage is.

Most likely possible as I have constently been reporting the spam and all of a sudden the last couple of days I haven't seen any. And now this notice from Google. Google's security of "I am not a robot" is quite strict though and should be succcessful at filtering out anyone sending spam. Especially of any bot from having the ability to send multiple spams in a row.

There is some occasional spam. I filter that out with gnus
score-files. Recent-ish discussions here, or in comp.sys.apple2 have
said the spam problem seems to be worse if you're reading on google
groups. I have no first-hand experience with that.

Plenty
of other web-based front ends that carry this group if you dont want
to use NNTP
