Does anyone have an image of Lady Tut (Mockingboard specific version) they would be willing to share?

I discovered it's available from the Asimov site as A2.JKlGAMES.po (800K) but this version only works with GS emulators it seems. Here are two screenshots (taken from ActiveGS), the second one shows it prompting for a Mockingboard. This is "Black Bag Classic Crack" edition...

http://postimg.org/image/ehpqn59wz/
http://postimg.org/image/4j4s0o0hf/

This image does boot in 8-bit Apple II emulators (e.g. AppleWin, Agat) when mounted as hard disk image but freezes when you try to launch Lady Tut. I used CiderPress to transfer this Lady Tut binary to a 140K (bootable DOS or ProDOS) image and it still crashes when you try to run it. I guess it must have been modified in some way for GS/3.5" compatibility.

There is another widely available 140K floppy image of Lady Tut ("Krac-Man crack"), which works fine in any 8-bit Apple emulator, but lacks Mockingboard support.

I used to play this game on a //e with Mockingboard but NEVER could hear the Mockingboard sounds, and this infuriated me at the time, I guess my copy was the wrong edition.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Sorry, that's not MB specific. I apologize.

Yes, it contains GS-specific code.
It also appears to be compressed with LZ. It's unclear at this moment if the code underneath is truly 8-bit. If it is, then it might be possible to recover it. I'll take a look when I have some time.

The two cheat codes in the cracked version: CELEBRATION (unlimited lives), PULSE (no enemies starting on next level).

I've got it showing the title screen, and I see it trying to use the MB to play the music that I can hear on the GS, but it's silent in the IIe.
Maybe they forgot to initialise something (or maybe I missed it).

Thanks for trying anyway. That GS-specific version might be a lost cause... unless somebody with a GS and an actual MB can get the music/sound effects working and make a film to show us what it's like.

Wait wait! It's playing music for me in MAME now, but not in AppleWin (AppleWin problem?).
There are a couple of graphics bugs left in my version (too aggressive with the trimming), but I'm close now (though a release today seems unlikely).

Then: should I wrap the whole thing with a MB detection routine, too, or people don't mind it being hard-coded as type A in slot 4?
There's no speech in the game. It's just playing notes.

PEBKAC. The volume was too low. It's playing MB music for me in AppleWin.
Sorry Nick.

Wow that's great can't wait! I just realized that the Agat emulator has the MB-version of Lady Tut pre-installed under "A2 Games for Agat9" - see screenshots:-
http://postimg.org/image/c5d3odxy9/
http://postimg.org/image/xdqs5tcf5/

Unfortunately this emulator doesn't support adding a MB to the Agat-9 (Russian clone). Also the disk image is in "AIM" format and loads through a Teac controller, which is unavailable in the Apple II modes (which do however get MB support). So once again the MB sound remains elusive....

I found a mention of the Agat-9 here:-
"I had both Agat-7 and Agat-9 computers. In a reality, photo in this article depicts early experimental model of Agat-4 which, really, was very close to Apple $$+. But both Agat-7 and Agat-9 had a lot of differences from Apples. For example, they used 800K floppy drives with different physical format (but it was possible to install second 144K drive or a pair of them via additional controller card)." - http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=509&st=1

Description of AIM format:-

Man, so quick with the finger at AppleWin recently. ; - )

Detection would be cool, but I assume the original required slot 4. The crack is unlikely to have taken out a detect routine if there was one. I notice it doesn't crash if you say you have a MB when you don't. Does it do any checking at all?

Cheers,
Nick.

Yeah, I know. It's my bad habit. I need to work on that.

No checking. The crackers put in a routine to patch every reference in the code to whatever slot you say, but the game will just write to slot 4 by default.
There's also a speaker routine that will be used if you select type C. So, I'll probably just check if MB is installed at slot 4, and switch to the speaker mode if not. Then I don't have to patch anything.

Yeah, now I see my testing was inadequate. In particular, when asked if I had a MB (in GSport) I typed "y" - which is quite different from "Y". Now I see the slot question, and it hangs without a MB.

Fair enough.

It's not hanging - it's a *really* long tune, and it's not interruptible.

In Asimov /incoming is my attempt at this.
It's on a ProDOS disk, but it's a standalone file, so it can be copied to a DOS disk.
It detects and uses a MB in slot 4, otherwise the speaker routine is used.

There's an interesting message about turning over the disk. I haven't triggered it yet, but I really hope that the original was a single-sided thing. I might have to revisit this title to see what's going on.

Yes, nobody can download from incoming.

It will be moved to the appropriate place eventually and show up in the index:
ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/site_index.txt

It was approved today, so everyone can try it and tell me about bugs.
Oh, and don't try to pause the game. I'll fix that once I've played through, to see if I can trigger the "turn disk" routine.

Sad to say - the end sequence is possibly lost forever. After completing level 9, the Black Bag version asks you to turn over the disk and then attempts to load something from the floppy in slot 6. The Krac-Man version shows a different message and then reboots instead.
...unless we can find the BB *disk* version...

Having reached level 9, got confused by the novel layout and was promptly killed off. Without a save-state to fall back on I'll try to conquer this another day. MB music working beautifully (title sequence, end of level, upon acquiring a gun). This rescued version is all the more valuable considering the handful of stuff designed for MB. Hopefully missing side B will turn up some day.

(... MB also sounds when you die)
The Lady Tut "longplay" walkthru posted on youtube (Krac-Man compatiboot version) shows this message appearing at the end of level 9:-
"THE ANCIENT SCROLL SAYS:
YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE GAME! WATCH FOR LADY TUT ][ PRESS <RESET> TO CONTINUE MR KRAC-MAN BIDS THEE 'HAIL THOU ART A GOOD PLAYER!'
So maybe that's all there is

Yeah, that's not the original message, obviously. It should say

THE ANCIENT SCROLL SAYS:
FLIP OVER THE MAGIC DISK (GAME DISK),
RE-INSERT INTO THE CHAMBER WALL (DISK DRIVE),
AND UTTER THE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN WORD 'RETURN'

Quite a find. I've asked on the FB group to see if anyone has the original.

Or somebody without kids and a mortgage could just spend $650 on eBay. ; - )

Thank you Antoine, I'm looking forward to making a complete version, even though I will have to re-release my file version.

Yes, I received from Antoine this morning a dump of the second side.

It's done! In Asimov /incoming is a ProDOS file-based version with end sequence and Mockingboard support.
You can even watch the end sequence by itself.
set $C1 to MB slot+#$C0
load LADY.TUT.1 to $800
move it to $8000

This is terrific! I managed to play just the end sequence following your instructions but can't hear any MB sound. Might have to play the game from beginning to end just for that. I tried to set $C1 to C4 (for slot 4?)

Corrected instructions from the discussion over at comp.sys.apple2:
]call -151
*bload lady.tut.1,a$800
*ff59g
*8000<800.2caem
*c0:0 c4 (using AppleWin, Mockingboards in slots 4 and 5)

I thought the end sequence was meant to have sound?
I don't hear any in this video.

Is the animation running in a timing loop? (ie with fast emulator speed, still scrolls slowly?)

Andrew,
Here is the description of the video I posted of Qkumba's crack:

"This is the never-seen end sequence found on the B-side of Lady Tut by Programe. An Apple II game pubished in 1983.
For the story, the file cracks of that game have never included the end sequence recorded on the B-side.
Now shown for the first time in August 2015! HT Qkumba! Mockingboard users would benefit from a musical score."

The animation was running at 1MHz.
