I just downloaded AppleWin and just about to run some old programs I used
about 10 years ago.
The problem is that I need a blank (initialized) disk image for further
operations, and I don't know how to!
Of coarse I've tried the procedures according to the HELP menu.
At first, everything went just OK.
Inserted master.dsk in drive 1 and started AppleIIe.
Selected drive 1 and instead of selecting an existing file,
I gave a new name (work.dsk) and confirmed that I wanted to create it.
But as I was about to create a new disk image, I got a message
"Unable to open File c:\APPLEWIN\Work.dsk."
and I think I can't proceed anymore from this point.
What's wrong with me?
According to the HELP menu, I should type in a program such as
"10 PRINT CHR$(4);"CATALOG" "
and then type "INIT HELLO"
What does this mean?
You see, I used AppleII so long ago and have forgotten almost everything about
the language I use in the system.
Any suggestions or comments (please post it or mail me) will be highly
appreciated.
Oh and I almost forgot, could anybody tell me Mr. O'Brien's (the author)
e-mail address?
Thanks in advance.

The solution that works for me is to copy the master.dsk image and
just reformat it. Apparently, the procedure for creating a blank
disk image does not work properly in AppleWin. But just about any
program that wants a blank disk will happily format whatever disk
image you give it, and not care that it had info on it already.
Just be sure that you don't reformat your last copy of master.dsk.
Just me.

I get exactly the same result. My workaround on this one is to
copy an existing disk image to a new file name, then use that
disk.

INITialize the disk, when it boots, use the HELLO program as the
first program. This one's a DOS 3.3 command (As opposed to
ProDOS).

- nothing, I hope :-)
Everybody forgets things when becoming "ripe"
Now, joke aside, when You are unable to format a disk image
like the help menu told You to do (this below means a _real_ disk)
>

- write a program (oneliner telling DOS to list disk contents)
- and tell Apple Dos to put this program alongside
with DOS itself onto a diskette after formatting same, giving this
program the name hello and telling the copy of DOS to start a program
named hello immediately after booting
A solution to Your problem could be to take a copy of the DOS 3.3
system master disk and to delete every file on it. Alternatively
You could get one of the blank disk images from asimov.
Feel free to email me if You need further info after having looked for
- and read - Nathans Apple FAQs
hope this helped,
