Paste Problem

Can anyone help me on this?

When I copy text containing German characters inside XEmacs and paste it
inside XEmacs, I get additional symbols, e.g.

[copy] au ßeruniversit är ---> [paste] au \201 ßeruniversit \201är

How can I get rid of this?

I use XEmacs [version 21.4.22; January 2009] on Win32/cygwin.
