American University

The Department of Computer Science of the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a term faculty appointment for Academic Year 2020-2021. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field. The appointment is a one-year position and will commence on August 24, 2020.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field. Highly qualified applicants with a Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field will also be considered. The ideal candidate will be an inspiring teacher with demonstrated excellence in entry-level Computer Science teaching. Competency in the teaching of computer organization (in a hands-on electrical/computer engineering fashion) is desirable but not required. The successful candidate will be expected to teach some of our Computer Science I and II sections and, if comfortable with them, sections of our Computer Science III course or sections of our engineering-style lab-based computer organization course. CS I is a Python-based course that serves as an introduction to the computer science major, CS II is a Java-based introduction to data structures and object-oriented programing, and CS III is our C/C++ based systems programming course. Alternatively, one of these courses could be replaced by another course of the candidate’s interest available in the department. The successful candidate will be expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.

The Computer Science Department offers both a BS and a MS in computer science. The undergraduate major has been experiencing rapid growth. Learn more about the department at https://www.american.edu/cas/cs/.
