It's too bad, too. When I was going to college, MS DOS and Unix were the
"in" thing and that's what the schools taught. I remember my
"Operating Systems Theory & Implementation" class. A very common computer
course. Anyway, this class did nothing but talk about compilers and
operating systems already used in the school [namely, MS DOS and Unix duuuh].
What we need for new scientists and like some elite colleges-- hands on
courses for IMPLEMENTING operating systems, not just talking about them.
