I'm fairly new to Vi but after reading and re-reading all the
documentation I'm still scratching my head figuring something out.

It seems that there is some default option used when splitting windows
so that windows are always split horizontally. Opening a file, using
help, entering :split, :Explore, etc., all split the current screen
horizontally. Yes, I can use vs[plit], but most often, I'm left with
horizontally split windows that I need to re-arrange.

I found in the documentation "set nosb" and "set spr" available, but
from what I've seen they're not having any effect. Maybe they do
something else. <g>

Ideally, I'd like all splits to be vertical unless otherwise specified,
but I'd settle for being able to control things a bit more.

Thanks for any help.
