I have been using the Epix (JackFlash) DSL and Macsense MIH-130 XRouter Pro
for ages without a problem until a few months ago.
Epix changed there PPPOE authentication from CHAP to PAP and this wouldn't
work with the XRouter until they emailed me revised firmware (labeled
as 1.19g but display in the admin page the version 1.20a) in March. (This
fix still doesn't seem to be available from their web site.)
That worked fine until very recently (the last few weeks) when now the
ability to connect seems very intermittent. It sometimes gets through
and sometimes doesn't for extended periods of time. Yet whenever it
is failing if I bypass the XRouter and connect "manually" using one
machine and the Epix supplied PPPOE software, it works fine.
Obviously I have tried all the usual things(reconfiguring, power
cycling the router, using manual IP addresses rather than DHCP (which
works fine btw.) ... i.e. the router part works fine just not the
PPPOE.
Has anyone else encountered this problem ? Has something at Epix to do
with their authentication changed yet again ?
I will obviously check through the Epix and Macsense support channels
but am interested to hear if anyone else has encountered this problem.
BTW. Can anyone else using Epix recommend an alternative router that
works reliably and/or whose web site firmware support page is updated
more frequently ? I really like the Xrouter when it is working but
these recent problems are annoying enough to consider switching
brands ... I was considering getting their Aero version but now am
not so sure.

Turns out this was a transient problem at Epix that affected all of
these kinds of routers (Macsense, Linksys, Asante etc). It has now
been rectified.
Strange that it worked just fine with a direct connection from the
Mac using the software PPPOE.
