I should warn you who reads this that I am rather clueless
with ADSL stuff. Yesterday was my first attempt at it.

I called bellsouth to get DSL. Since they sent me the USB modem
instead of one with ethernet port (I said I have a Mac. It seems to
them Mac => USB. Problem is that I do not have USB and also want to
put the modem connected to my SMC router), I went ahead and got an
Alcatel speedtouch home.

I then put two filters that came with the USB modem: one with my phone
and the other with my external 56K and the ADSL modems. Then, I
connected the 10BaseT port in the modem straight to the ethernet port
in my Mac (straight through cable).

I boot the DSL modem.

o Pwr/Alarm led blinks red then amber than stabilizes with green
(Normal operation according to manual).

o Line Sync LED comes up and keeps blinking every second or so. Would
that mean the modem is not yet configured to work with the bellsouth
network? If so, how do I go about changing it and what are the
parameters?

This is how it is currently configured:

Phonebook

Name VPI VCI Type
Usage Action
Br1 8 35 bridge
configured -
Br2 8 36 bridge
free
Br3 8 37 bridge
free
Br4 8 38 bridge
free
RELAY_PPP1 8 48 pptp
configured -
RELAY_PPP2 8 49 pptp
configured -
RELAY_PPP3 8 50 pptp
configured -
RELAY_PPP4 8 51 pptp
configured -

o LAN led blinks ever so often. However, the led on the back of the
ethernet connector on the modem is stable green and I have no problem
telnetting or using netscape to access the modem.

o When I access the modem through netscape, I have "WARNING : Modem is
down" in nice red letter on the top of the screen. I assume that is
because modem is yet to be configured to talk to the DSL network.

FYI, what annoys me is that someone I know has the same modem.
He slapped it to the WAN port in his router, entered the parameters
for PPPoD (I believe) such as username and password, and off it went.
But, right now I do not seem even to be able to get it to work without
adding a router to the mess. =(

Make sure that the line you run to your DSL modem is not filtered. This was
probably the issue. Also, verify that bellsouth has enabled DSL on your
phone line already. If it's before the install date they gave you, chances
are the phone line has yet to be enabled.

I think I tried that -- I connected the modem at one time
straight to the wall jack -- but had no change in behavior. I will,
however, try in a different outlet just in case that one is
problematic. I do hope th eproblem is that easy to solve though =)

According to bellsouth, the phone line has been enabled for
like 1 week. =(
