On a line that is set for meridian 5312? digital business set, can you
actually use an analog modem( if you get the right pair).

Although I dont know the particular equipement of which you write, my
guess would be no you can't. Digital phones use an entirely different
protocol for sending calls to the phone then an analog phone or modem.
The pairs have nothing to do with it. However, I could be wrong given
the mentioned equipement.

You cannot directly use an analog modem (or an answering machine, by the way)
off of a line that is set for a Meridian 5312 set. A line for a Meridian
5312 set is a digital line. However, you may purchase a converter device
that will accomplish what you want. The company that makes this device is
Dees. I don't know their phone number, but maybe that are in the 800
directory assistance.

The Meridian "Digital" Centrex line used by the 5312 and other Northern Telecom
telephone sets is actually analog. It is a single pair 900 ohm line with the
voice path being a normal analog signal. As such you can listen to the conversation
with a butt set. The off-hook/on-hook, dial pad, LCD information however is all
sent on a 1khz data stream on top of the voice. You can often hear it quite
clearly when the display updates on the phone.

As Brian points out DEES Communications makes a line of accesories for these lines.
They are in Calgary, Alberta.
