So we get this flyer in the mail touting "AT&T Callvantage Service" that
combines unlinited local/domestic LD service, VM optionally to e-mail,
"locate me" service, 10-party conferencing, online feature management,
caller-ID with NUMBER ONLY (I guess they save money by avoiding the DB dip),
call waiting/forwarding and 3-way calling. You use a standard POTS phone
on an IP adapter, and the rate is $40/month (you must already have a broadband
internet connection.) Has anyone actually tried this?

There are many companies offering simlar services, including Packet8 and Vonage.
AT&T gets the nod for best quality, but they are also very expensive at
$39.99/month after the trial period. Packet8 is only $19.95 a month for a
similar service, and they do offer CallerID Name.

Vonage allows you to in certain markets. Haven't looked at the AT&T product
enough to know.

Caller ID with name is coming soon. I don't know the date - but during
their service upgrade a couple of weeks ago, they mentioned that it is
coming soon.

I use it and the quality is really excellent, even when
uploading/downloading. I did some download speed tests while on the
phone... and the download speeds are still respectable and the voice
still sounds good.... (I have cable - I can't vouch for DSL).

The advanced feature I use the most it "Follow Me" - I always have it
ring both my home and cellphone... so I don't miss calls.

For the first year, with the discount, their price is competative...
We shall see how prices go after that....

One thing, AT&T does have a 1 year contract, as opposed to the other
services.
