dialing from Australia to USA

What string of numbers would one dial in Australia
to reach a phone in the USA?

For example, say I want to reach (212) 555-1212
down under.

You would dial whatever the 'international' access number is, then '12125551212'

The 'country code' for the USA (along with Canada and a bunch of
Caribbean islands) is '1'.

I support some dial up users one of whom opened a remedy ticket I would
like to close with a specific answer. If it were me, I'd just ask the
damned hotel clerk/concierge for dialing instructions once I got there.

you dial 0011 1 212 555 1212 to call the US from Australia

to make your call go through faster, dial "#" after the last digit.

1 for the W1 "country" code
2125551212 for the national number
or in total 0012125551212

Sorry MJ, But Dennis is right, International access in Australia is 0011,
America is 1, area code is 212, the number is 5551212.
