I remember seeing a more normal looking 16 button phone in the ATT (now
Lucent) government products catalog a few years ago. It was a product out
of their government group in North Carolina. At the time the price for a
model 2500 set was somewhere around $300.

Many modems let you do so:
ATDTABCDEF would dial "ABCDEF"
ATDT"ABCDEF" would dial "222333".
I think this was USRobotics Courier.
Hope this helps.

Yes, AUTOVON was a 4-wire system. The good news is that most
such sets were converted 2-wire ones and still have networks.
So all you must do is change a slew of jumpers.
Some phones were 4-wire AND 2-wire. This includes the enormous
Call Directors used by the SECDEF and others at that level. The
A-control for a 4-wire line would trip a slew of relays in the
phone closet [yes, the phone needed its own closet..] and turn on
4-wire mode. As you might suspect, you can not conference a 2-wire
and 4-wire call together ;-|
There are other options to get ABCD tones. Most IC-tone geneator
chips have them; you just need to grab that select line. I've seen
hacks with a SPDT toggle switch to select same.
Further, I'm told some of the original cup-core inductor pads
had a tap for them. Again, minor hardware hacking will be needed.
As for what you DO with them, well.... If you use the A button
and Willam Perry answers, don't blame me....

Just out of curiosity -- why would you want/need to dial ABCD in the
private sector? I don't know of any PBX or telco's that recognize
those frequencies...???

I used to use a modified touch-tone pad (for radio control)
in which I had the wire from the right-most column connected to
a toggle switch, which was connected to either the "correct" pin
on the tone generator circuit, or to the one next to it (which
produced the 1633 Hz tone) when the right-most row was used.
Not the most convenient thing to use, but it worked.

Great, this was exactly what i was looking for.
Tahk you.
Well i`ve been doing just that for a couple of months. But it thought
it would be better if there was a nice phone with 16 buttons to use.

My request is not for the private sector.

Siemens *used* to sell handsets with the "ABCD" keys in the '80s, but if
they still do these days I can't tell you.

I know Stor Nordisk Telegraf (GNT) used to sell their F
phone with 16 buttons. Also ITT used to have some.
So, try checking in Denmark, you should find some sets
there.

That depends. In some releases of the Meridian 1 software, sending any
of ABCD will cause the call to crash (not the switch, just the call).
If you have Autovon on a Meridian 1, it uses ABCD to do it.
I have seen ABCD used to provide additional security for phone based
services. The ABCD digits are used in the account/pin information, which
greatly reduces the number of potential threats (not so many hackers
have that phone, or know of it) and, more importantly, increases the
search space for exhaustive attacks.

In the 1980s ITT Standard Elecric Kirk in Denmark produced a phone with
ABCD keys, beautifully made and with a price to match. The case was
designed by Bang & Olufsen and had a concave top. The design was taken
up by CGCT the French ITT company (now part of Matra) and the dark brown
version was common in France. British Telecom badged the handsfree
version for a while.
An ISDN version was talked about, but I don't know whether it was ever a
product.

Nope. Check Graybar.
MetroTel makes two external 16-button dialpad, one with memory, which
include the appropriate network stuff to go on a phone line. Model
2312C is a manual dial, while 2315 has memories built in.
Or, you could get a dialless 2500 set, and a PIPO 16 button pad.
Graybar doesn't list any 16 button phones, nore any conversion kits.
And rememer, Graybar has the same kind of life-safety exclusions in their
catalog as, say Ti's components division: so if you're planning on
using this in a Command and Control system, don't plan on suing them if
it breaks. :-)
