The first pair, green and red, go to white/blue and blue/white.
The second pair, black/yellow, go to white/orange and orange/white.

Green, red, black, yellow.

Try the FAQ in the comp.dcom.cabling newsgroup. Or else look in a phone
closet in a small business.

My old POTS wires are

Black(T)
Red(T)
Green(R)
Yellow(R)

[I think I have (t)ip and (r)ing right]

My bulk CAT3 wire for expansion are:

Orange
White-Orange
Blue
White-Blue
Green
White-Green
Brown
White-Brown

My question is: are there any standards for connecting a certian CAT3
color to pair (i.e. Orange & Orange White) to the first line (i.e. red
& green) and a second CAT3 color pair to the second line (i.e. black &
yellow)

Also on the wiring block is there a standard for punching down the

incomming lines and outgoing extionsions (ie do you punch the
incomming lines from the top down the first column R,G,Y,B?)

Ive searched all over the internet and elsewhere and cant find any

standard. They probably vary, but i'd like the RBOC guy or future
contractor to understand what I did.

Thanks for any suggestions!

The Red should be (R)

Pr1 = Blue/White-Blue
Pr2 = Orange/White-Orange
Pr3 = Green/White-Green
Pr4 = Brown/White-Brown

Don't remember which is (R)ing. I think it's the solid color.

+-...Tip...Green
-...Ring...Red

(a little memory help: T. I. P. Tip Is Positive, R. I. NG. Ring Is NeGative)
(to help confuse things, the phone lines use a positive ground, so tip is
ground also)

Black and Yellow don't fit any memory helps, just need to remember that
Black is Tip for line 2

now,

Tip..... Green.... White w/ Blue stripe ..... Top position on a punch block
pair
Ring...Red......... Blue w/ White Stripe .... 2nd position

The order for a 25 pair cable:
1. white w/ blue
1. blue w/ white
2. white w/ org
2. org w/ white
3. white w/ green
3. grn w/ white
4. white w/ brown
4. brn w/ white
5. white w/ slate (called slate, not gray, that way you don't confuse it
with GReen)
5. slate w/ white

for the next 20 pairs, substitute the following colors for the white in the
above list
red
black
yellow
violet

My favourite mneumonic device for remembering the binder colours:

Bell

Service

and

We

Big
Yellow

Yes, there is the standard (at least AT&T think so):

The right order for all 4-pair twisted-pair cables (CAT3, CAT5 - does not
matter) is:

W-Orange
Orange
W-Green
Blue
W-Blue
Green
W-Brown
Brown

Pairs should be punched into f.e. RJ45 jack in this order and pairs are
enumerated in the following order:

W-Blue/Blue - first pair
W-Orange/Orange - second
W-Green/Green - third
W-Brown/Brown - fourth

If you have two T/R pairs, as a rule the first Tip/Ring pair should be
connected to Blue/W-Blue and the second Tip/Ring - to W-Green/Green. It does
compatibility with two-pairs cables.

Wiring blocks can have (at least all AT&T/Lucent blocks have) the same color
marking and the same order: Blue(1), Orange(2), Green(3), Brown(4).

Is it clear? I'm ready to continue if something is missed.
