Could someone please explain those terms to me?

I would like to hook up a plain old fax machine/voice phone and I'm
somewhat confused about EXO/EXS and what they have to do with regular
phone lines.

Can I hook a plain old phone to an EXO or EXS jack and will it work?

And what is the difference between EXO and EXS anyway?

Is there an acronym primer anywhere that I can read?

Thanks,

EXO = no voltage supplied (proprietary/digital phone usually) the
phone has it's own power supply

EXS = POTS the switch or C.O. supplies the power
