i live in NYC, but this summer i will be going on a travel camp that
goes from Denver to Arizona and everywhere in between (but doesn't
allow cell phones ). I was wondering, what kind of wireless data
(internet) plans are offered out there for laptops. On this coast i
know there are many plans that go fro seventy eighty dollars, but
t-mobile for some odd reason offers a 20 dollar, unlimited use, data
plan (http://www.t-mobile.com/plans/default.asp?tab=internet, but you
get 10 off if combined with a cell phone plan) and i was wondering if
anyone else offered a plan like it? All suggestions (including don't
worry for another few months, things are on the change).

Which shows $29.99 plus taxes and fees.... works out to $31/mo here in
Orygun.

SPCS offers their version ('PCS Vision') for $10/mo extra on top of voice
plan. I've used both. SPCS is 1xRTT, typically 50-70kbps bidirectional;
T-Mobile is GSM, 38kbps down, 19 kbps up.
Both offfer POP3 and SMTP services to their subscribers, but you are better
off using your own POP3 and SMTP service.
SPCS gets huffy if you use a lot of data through a cellphone, will not
support you and may yank you for excessive use; they want you to use a
laptop PC Card modem, not a cellphone, for data. T-Mobile does not care. You
can buy a new or used T-mobile-supported GSM laptop modem and move your SIM
card into it for laptop-based access.
The West is a Big Place, and if you specify your route, maybe some of us
can offer suggestions as to better carriers.
