Hi,

Can modems read DTMF tones ? After the modem picks up the phone ,
is it possible for it to read the DTMF tones generated by the
remote caller using a touch tone phone. I know this stuff can be
done by telephony cards, but can it be done by ordinary hayes
compatible modems .

I 'll be grateful for any help.

Most of the voice compatibale modems can do it... like the ZOOM, VFP
Voice/Fax/Data modem.

Just give it the AT#CLS=8 command and then it will decode DTMF
(that works on any of the Rockwell based modems). Other modems use
different codes.

My USR HST does tone recognition (passes it to the computer). The command?
Rather interesting that it's AT&T.

Glen & Tony ,

Thank you guys . You have really been a source of great help .
However , a question remains and that is Is there a standard MODEM
command that can tell me if modem of a particular brand supports
this feature ? Is there some reference material I can look up ?

I haven't read the discussion, but to give you a short (fresh) answer to
your question:

All USRobotics modems feature the AT%T command
(that was a percent sign). You'll have to put the modem off
hook first (with ATH1 or ATH0) and then use AT%T.
My own USRobotics modem gives 0 signs after any number
pressed, but a normal one should just give you the numbers
pressed.

Another modem which should be able to do this is the Zyxel
modem. This modem is justed in conjuction with software as
a voicemial or fax-on-demand system (besides that it is a
standard modem :).

I have a USR Sportster 14.4 Ext and it does not work for me.

AFAIK '%' commands are restricted to the Courier line.

It gives the '0' when the DTMF tone has stopped, i.e.

caller sends 1336 & 770Hz
modem detects tone
----> '5'
caller stops tone
modem detects silence
----> '0'

^^^^
AT%T

AT&T is just a modem test command. :-)))

I wasn't expecting that, but ofcourse that could be the case.
That's because the sportsters are low budget modems,
and probably have modified chipset.

I should have said 'courier or dual standard modems' instead
of 'ALL' modems.

Sorry about that,
