does anyone have experience with traffic shapers, a single solution in
a box, or traffic shaping appliances such as packeteer makes, and if
so do these devices really work... I know of traffic shaping,
prioritization, et al, but today is the first i have heard of such a
device as a single third party network solution, and if these things
do actually work, why doesn't cisco make such an animal... or have i
been living under a rock... any and all information greatly
appreciated...

thanks,

We have packetshapers between 2610's and cat 2950's,
guaranteeing 20k for each Citrix session etc.

They work well, but if you use compression on WAN links,
you'll need to compensate for this on the packetshapers config.

i.e.: 256k frame relay PVC with FRF9 payload-compression
(hardware based) can actually pass up to 4 or 5 times 256k, so tell
the shaper there's 1 Mbit for example.

Let the shaper discover whats going on on the network before
turning shaping on.

Cisco offer:

Packeteer have copyright over the full OSI 7 layer discovery engine they
use.
Cisco will have to aquire Packeteer.

Mac.
