I am considering the CCDA exam and I have one queston. Consider teh
following scenario:
If I have two routers separated by: a few yards, a few hundred or thousand
yards, a few hundred miles.
How are these routers connected in the above three scenarios and what part
does a TELCO play, if any.
Thanks ,
John.

Odd questions but it's been about a year and a half since I took that
test...so here goes:

1. A few yards, easy, I connect them together myself using either an
ethernet crossover cable, a common switch, or serial crossovers, or a
home-baked frame-relay switch (ala the global command, "frame-relay
switching"). The ethernet crossover would be most preferred. I own all
of it, the telco doesn't come into play except in as much as I get extreme
joy from not having to work with them.
2. A few hundred yards. Depends on if I have control of those few hundred
yards or not. If I have control of it, I'm running fiber for a 100BaseFX
connection, or copper pairs for dsl, or maybe I just install a wireless
bridge if there is line-of-sight. Again, no telco.
If I DON'T own anything that runs between them, I get a 56k leased line or
a T-1 or Frac-T1, from the Local LEC or CLEC. Very low cost and with the
low port density and small distance, frame relay isn't cost-effective.
3. A few thousand yards, see #2, same scenario.
4. A Few hundred miles. Now you're talking the kind of distance where
frame relay pays off, and it's too far for wireless, so you have to go
with an InterLATA carrier and buy the service from them.
