I'm not familiar with wireless protocols in detail, but I was talking to a
friend who was setting up a wireless LAN in an office. He said that the
WAPs can be configured to allow usage by MAC address, or they can require
the client to present an authentication key. Or you can disable this
completely, so that anyone can connect. The latter is quite common, which
is why people can walk down the street with their laptops and PDAs and
start surfing the net using the wireless LANs of businesses they pass by.
