I give it exactly one year. That's how long it took Bay to completely
eradicate the well-known Xylogics name.

I don't agree; the circumstances of Bay buying Xylogics were different
to Nortel buying Bay. Bay personnel still refer to the Xylogics name
and products still carry the Xylogics copyright messages e.g. Annex term
servers.
The motive for Nortel buying Bay isn't just for a quick move into the
data networking market; they want a distinct division that fills that
gap in their portfolio. Bay has a very well established customer base
and I doubt of Nortel will want to just brush that aside for the sake of
rebadging everything.
Besides, look on the bright side...it could have been Lucent who bought
Bay! Incidentally, I heard this morning that they (Lucent) have just
bought SDX (makers of the INDeX switches) for £124m.
In any case, I think this is just the start of a series of
mergers/takeovers where large comms companies such as Nortel start
buying datacomms firms such as Bay. Within the next couple of years I
fully expect to see someone take over Cisco.... :-)

Having left Bay/Xylogics this past September, I must beg to differ.
They got a few of the more starry-eyed folks to alter the copyright
messages (if there are some still there, then they missed them in
their zeal to get it done), and there were a long series of training
sessions which one could boil down to the mantra, "we're all Bay."
There is still a great deal of cohesion in the old Xylogics group, but
this is despite the best efforts of Bay management, not because of
benevolence.

Well, I can't say I agree with that, either. "Branding" and "market
image" are all the rage these days -- and the intrinsic value in a
well-known and respected name be damned.
Funny incident: while I was at Bay, an old customer found my new phone
number and called me to ask if Xylogics had gone out of business. He
hadn't seen the name in a long time, and he didn't realize that the
"Bay RA" and "Bay RAC" were the same thing as the old Xylogics Annex.

I wasn't casting aspersions at Nortel. They're not a bad company at
all. I've just been through this before, and the reality is very
different from what common sense would dictate.

Or the other way around. Yes, there's a lot of pressure on the
telecommunications companies to come up with better datacomm stories.

Amen, Brother Carlson. From another heathen amoungst the back sliden
children of the Church of Doogie. Wonder how many Bay executives will
wind up on "Special Projects" like some of our old Xylo friends? ;-)

Yep. Been there, done that, lost that battle. Hmmm.. that person is
also in "Special Projects" ?????

Psss... don't tell any body. Networld+InterOp NOC was still using 45
MicroAnnex XLs as console servers in Las Vegas. Funny, they all were
still the grey boxes with the old Xylogics "batwing" logo. Any odds they
will still be in use in Atlanta? I doubt anybody at Bay even knows
SoftBank has them. Probably just the CSE's.
Bubba
I dunno. Almost everyone I know still calls them Annexes (Annecies?).
Some companies go out of their way to maintain the existing name
and attendant goodwill. Of course, I still call a certain maker of
phone equipment WECO. :-)

Very good odds that they'll be in use in Atlanta, they still work. Also,
given that most of them are right out on the show floor, and that some
Bay people work on the NOC team, I'd say that they know. May not care,
but they know.

BUBBA! This is like Xylogics' old home week. :-) I know what Jim is up
to these days, what about you? I'm actually doing sales engineering at
GTEI/BBN now - couldn't stay away from MA, had to leave Livingston/Lucent
and move back. :-) Ben 'Gryphon' Hutchins, ex-Xylo, and ex-Livingston,
is my housemate again. He just resigned from UltraNet, out looking for
a new job now. Christy Ratelle is also with GTEI/BBN now...
So, where are the other ex-Xylo folks? Anyone else lurking?

Stated a bit differently.....
The person who ran screaming "Get those &#@&% Xylogics mouse pads off
those peds before Dave House sees them!" at me at a certain cable show
does NOT know the Xylogics logo is still on those units. You are right.
Robin, Martin and crew could care less.

Left a couple of weeks after Jim did. A week later there was a
management seminar called "Retaining key employees". One of the Product
Managers on the 8000/5399 asked if there would be a Carlson/Bubba case
study. :-)
Bubba
And the competitors are GTE and Ma Bell, no?
We called the plural "Annexen," for what it's worth.

Actually, I was in 8 Federal on Tue afternoon. Had a beer with mikeo,
norm, and dominique. They mentioned you were back. Me? Bubba outside
of Texas is like a cowboy without a hat. It can be done but it just
looks funny. Product Evangelist for one of the IBM divisions doing
systems management.
> So, where are the other ex-Xylo folks? Anyone else lurking?
Probably not. A lot of the other marketing and sales folks I can locate
never did figure out this newsgroup stuff. :-) But of the ones who might
still be lurking out there, Stan is taking the summer off. Carlos is
still USR. Smitty is Xylan. Wilbur is Xyplex. Lost track of Shorey.
Leboffe is Shiva. And of course, Doogie and Moe are Stratus. But they
would be too busy to ready news. (grin)
Bubba
Even farther off-topic (or, maybe not) - since "Annexen" have come up, ;)
anybody out there have any old Annex-II's (or II-e's) that still work that
they want to sell - we still have a bunch in service, and are always
looking for spares (new ones too expensive; too much trouble to have
separate software for old vs. new versions). They were real work-horses!
If so, please e-mail me... PS: I still call NT "Northern Telecom", too!
Thanks,
Don Miller

The bright side of this - a couple weeks before Lucent bought SDX, SDX
bought Network Alchemy (Sean Harding & John Birbeck). Until June 15 the Bay
boys in Watford were real worried they would end up with their old boss
again. Now Lucent has Sean Harding.
Always wondered what happened to him. I guess I figured he'd be
retired to a beach in the south of France after getting Xylogics to
buy Scorpion ...
