what is the difference between the terms trail and Path in SDH ? Is it
the same ?

Adding and dropping is happening in Path layer or in Multiplexer

what is the E-RDI ?

ITU-T recommendation G.806 contains the definition:
3.38 path: A trail in a path layer.

So: the generic term is trail, but you can also use path.

Adding and dropping happens in connection functions.
The MS layer has no connection function, a path layer
can have a connection function.

That is enhanced RDI, it gives more detailed information
about the remote defect (location/layer)
See Appendix VII in ITU-T recommednatio G.707.
