i've been living (happily) with alpha pagers and qpage/equivalents
since the early 90s ... my network management software emits SNPP
messages, which qpage converts to TAP/IXO and delivers via modems
attached to the PSTN. i like this approach ... because my
infrastructure can melt down (switches, routers, mail relays,
firewalls, Internet connection), and my alpha pager still receives
messages about the misbehaving equipment. whereas if i try to send e-
mail (via Internet-based SMTP-to-SMS gateways, for example) to mobile
devices ... well ... that doesn't get very far when the intervening
gear has gone down
but i'd like to expand support for mobile devices other than alpha
pagers. and, as far as i can see, that means sending SMS messages to
service providers ... via some sort of 'out-of-band' path, like the
PSTN. [and finding a service provider which accepts messages
delivered this way]
has anyone solved this problem?
