SNMP and SMC7904WBRA modem/router

I'd like to monitor usage of my ADSL connection in order to not exceed the
cap imposed by my ISP. I've previously used an old SMC Barricade (7004) but
that was known for poor SNMP support - it was bodged into a later firmware
as an afterthought.

I've now replaced that router with a modern SMC Barricade, an SMC7904WBRA,
with the latest firmware version (0.39). Does it work? No, it damn well
doesn't. =:-(

While I'm waiting for SMC tech support to get back to me, and writing my
refund request to the supplier, perhaps someone here can help...

[using both MRTG and PRTG software...]

There appear to be four ports available: loopback, WLAN (wireless), LAN, and
ATM. It's ATM I need to monitor of course, to see meaningful statistics for
traffic in and out of my connection. However, only LAN has both IN and OUT
data available - ATM returns data only for IN (as does WLAN). Not only that,
but LAN figures appear to be double what I should see.

So, has anyone here managed to get meaningful data out of a current
Barricade router? If so, how?
