I've been trying to get my Hayes Accura 56K Speakerphone modem to work
with a headset, with no luck. I've tried all combinations of plugging
the mic and earphone cables into the modem and into the soundcard, and
can't hear a thing. (This is using the Phone Tools software that came
with the modem, with the volume out set to the highest level, and the
modem set to "speaker on always".) The "manuals" for the modem and the
software don't cover this subject adequately.

I've tried it without the headset and the volume is too low. I've
tried a cable from the modem's line out to the sound card's line in,
and I've tried a pair of amplified speakers from the modem's line out.

There's not many combinations I haven't tried. The best result I can
get (when testing it by dialling 1471) is that the volume is still too
low to hear at its loudest (through the soundcard), but to get the
volume even that high, all Windows sounds are unbearably loud.

Needless to say, I decided not to bother testing voice-out with a
microphone until I get the speaker volume problem sorted.

Has anyone managed to get the above (or any) speakerphone modem to
work? If so, can you tell me how you did it? Thanks in advance.

Garry:

Here in the US I have two Modems with Lucent Technology Chipset (Like your
Hayes) with Speakerphones that act the same and don't work.

Turns out the problem Isn't the Internal Laptop (MICRON XKE) Motorola M1200
Modem or the MultiTech MessageSaver its (what we call in the states) MA
Bell.

Apparently my local Phone company needs to dig up the street to fix it. A
real embarrassment to me when I had three notebooks with the same problem,
and now I find its the Phone Company's fault.

Try your modem in a different town, with a different phone company if you
can.

Hope this helps!

The quality of the phone lines shouldn't effect speakerphone use, at least
one wouldn't think it would.

But any thing is possible.

Most likely the modems in question just have poor volume control/output to
the external speaker connection.

Try another modem before moving to a new town.

Good luck!

One would think that it should work on on all phone lines, but this isn't
the case. It works on GTE and PBX. I have tried the LT Speakerphone on two
different Pac Bell switches with the same results (the two PAC BELL central
offices are located in different states, but speakerphone sounded identical,
distorted and breaks up).

Pac Bell says it should work and that it is my equipment. I told them it
works on GTE, but they offered no explanation. I have two speakerphones
based on Lucent Technology chipsets(one is in the MICRON XKE, the other is
the MultiTech MessageSaver), and neither will work on the Pac Bell lines.

Go figure........
