I just installed a Zoom 56k-PCI modem in my system yesterday. At present,
I'm very disappointed in its features. It seems to not support Distinctive
Ringing or Credit card dialing. Two features that I believe should be
standard in today's modems. In addition, I ran into a similar annoyance of
other users of this modem. It locks-up the PC for about 2 seconds when
dialing.

I confronted ZOOM tech support about some of these issues. They immediately
said that it was Microsoft's problem! After a lengthly discussion, they
went as far as telling me to purchase a different ZOOM model to help resolve
issues.

I had similar support from 3COM tech support on an old Sportster. I'M SICK
AND TIRED OF THESE HIGH-N-MIGHTY MODEM MANUFACTURERS!!!

IS THERE ANY MODEM MANUFACTURER WORTHY OF OUR LOYALTY????

Caveat emptor -- check the product before purchase.

That suggests 16-bit drivers, and is typical of many host-based modems.

Good advice.

You have an obligation of reasonable care when selecting a product.

The PCI modem is Host based - meaning that your computer does almost all
of the functions of the modem. They are manufacturered since they are
cheaper and many consumers only see dollar signs when they want to buy
something (those $30 off-brand 56K modems are not modem hardware based).
I would recommend modem hardware based modems over host based modems
anyday... As always, don't buy any modem unless the store has a return
policy.

Ah, that explains why it's cheaper than the ISA. :-/ Until now, I'd always
associated PCI with *better* performance... what a crummy thing for Zoom
to do.
