I thought I should share my experiences with trying to get USR's
Winmodem to work even reasonably well with WinFax.

The Situation
A bunch of surveys I wanted to send out using a fax-modem and a mail
merge from Microsoft Word. Through Delrina, there is a decent macro to
do the merge -- which even works, albeit after considerably futzing
around and with some undocumented limitations.

The Software/Hardware
Microsoft Word for Windows 95
Delrina WinFax 7.0
USR Winmodem
Gateway P90 16 MB

The Problem
While the Winmodem/WinFax combination is reasonably successful at
sending out these surveys (seven pages long), it is disastrously bad
at receiving them. My bad fax run rate is harrowingly close to 40%
(!!!!).

Some Solutions
I have been a dutiful boy and tried all the "by the book" things. I
talked to USR; I talked to Delrina. I made sure I had the latest
patches for both the Winmodem (33.6) and for WinFax (7.02). I checked
for stray drivers and wierd bits in my SYSTEM.INI. But things didn't
improve.

So here's what I've come up with after a lot of discussion with tech
support at Delrina and USR. Trash the setup string that USR suggests
-- and the one that comes out of the box from Delrina. Use this one
from Delrina Tech Support: AT&H1F7S36=0S7=90. Turn off ECM on both
sending and receiving, and turn off 2D compression as well. Finally,
limit transmission speeds on incoming faxes to 9600 baud maximum.

The Outcome
With all of these tweaks, I've managed to get my receive rate up to
something like 90%. Mind you, the faxes come slower (no compression)
and do have more stray bits on them (no ECM). And I remain (perhaps
naively) convinced that 90% is still farcically low for all this
pricey hardware and software.

Thought some out there might like to know.

Xon/Xoff to overcome these problems.
