I am using a USR V.92 modem to connect to the internet.
I frequently make initial connections at less than 49.2 kbps
I have to hang up and try one or more times.
I semi-frequently connect at 50.6 kbps
If any can clue on what I can do to make 50.6 kbps the minimum connect
speed (or less desirably 49.2 kbps)?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Tracey

Keep in mind that connection speed isn't the most important
measure of your internet connection quality, throughput is. On some
lines, a good solid connection at less than 50.6 might provide more
throughput than a poorer or less stable 50.6 connection where the
speed falls back after the initial connect due to line conditions.
You can test throughput by downloading a compressed (like a zip) file
from a FTP or web server that is close and reliable, preferably one
that your own ISP has.
I've never bothered with a string that forces the modem to connect at
a particular speed. It will just fall back to what the line will
support anyway. With a default string, it will normally connect at
the best speed for the given line conditions.
