I want to connect my road runner cable modem to my 4 port linksys
router (BEFSR41) and my linksys router to my 8 port switch (onq). I
can't get it working.
I can connect the cable modem to the router on the uplink port (!) and
any port straight to the pc's network card and get internet access
that way. I don't understand why this works becuase the linksys
website states that the cable modem must go into the WAN port and the
configuration I desire from there would be to run a cable from the
router's uplink port to any port on my switch. This is how they say
it should work.
I only get 192. addresses using the above configuration. In fact, I
can't even get a good address going from the cable modem to the
router's wan port then from any port on the router directly to the pc.
Does anyone out there have any idea why I seem to have to take the
cable modem in through the uplink port on the router rather than the
WAN port? I bought a cross-over cable and tried using it, but no
avail and in fact, the wan light on the router doesn't come on and
stay green like it does with the straight-thru cable, so I'm assuming
straight through is what I need.
If I leave the cable modem feeding the uplink port, is there a way to
connect the router to the 8-port switch then?
Any help is tremendously appreciated!
I believe you need to hook it up using the WAN link and then activate the
Mac address Clone option and configure it to match one of the PC's that you
could get to work when directly hooked to the cable modem.
I'm sure others here will give you better suggestions but in my case my ISP
had limited my cable modem to only allowing only the first Mac Address it
saw from a PC. Once I cloned in the MAC address the rest of the router
started working just fine.
Remember to change the default password to something else, especially if you
turn on remote configuration.

1) Turn everything off for a few minutes.
2) Connect the cable modem to the WAN port on the router using straight
thru cable
3) Connect the 8 port switch via it's uplink port to one of the 4 LAN ports
on the router using a straight thru cable
4) Turn on the cable modem, then the router, then the switch
5) Make sure the PC's are set to obtain info automatically - reboot if
needed
6) Goto http://192.168.1.1 and check the router configuration. Check the
status tab for all the ip info
7) Reset the router to factory defaults if still no joy

: Hi,
Take your cable modem and connect to the WAN connection of the router.
Connect your 8 port switch to the uplink port of the router using a regular
port on the 8 port switch (not an uplink port on the switch).
Connect your PC's to the router or 8 port switch. Then unplug the router
and the cable modem power cords. Wait about 5 minutes and plug the power in
to the router. After it is booted, power up the cable modem and wait for it
to get synced. Now go into the Router setup, and go to the status page. You
should now do a DHCP release, and a DHCP renew. After the renew has
completed, try accessing the internet on your PC. If it still doesn't work,
or if you do not have an IP assigned after doing the DHCP renew, then you
will have to do MAC address cloning in the router to get the cable modem to
provide you an IP address.
If you go to the DHCP tab on the router setup screen, you can pull up the
DHCP clients table. This will show you the list of computers that are
detected as being connected to the router, providing that you have your PC's
set to obtain an IP address automatically. When you see the list of PC's
look for the PC that you have been able to get internet access on prior to
connecting the router. Write down this MAC address and then go to the
advanced tab of the router setup, and then choose MAC address cloning tab.
Enter your MAC address that you have written down here, and then go to the
Status page again (click setup tab again) and do a DHCP release and then a
DHCP renew.
At this point, you should have internet access. If you do not, then post
back here and I will try and offer more advice.

After consult with Tech from linksys, he suggested me to connect
through Uplink port. He said use it as a switch. However, I want to
use it as a router because I don't want anyone to see machines behind
the router.
I connected through uplink port the internet work ok. However, when I
tried connect using WAN port. There is no internet connection.
The solutions that I 've tried
1. upplug router, power up, DHCP release, renew to get the IP from WAN
(internet doesn't work)can't get IP address from WAN side in status
page
2. Mac address cloning , dhcp release , renew (internet still doesn't
work) no IP address from WAN
3. I've tried using fixed IP address, subnet mask, dns, default
gateway, in setup page and put everything the same as it connected
directly as my PC. (same result, still doesn't work).
After reading and trying all the solution that you post, I still
coundn't get internet access. Any more suggestions or helps, I would
really appreciat.
Thanks

ps. I'm new to this router things. what the difference between
hub,switch and router anyway?
