I know that a modem will lose it's IP when the power is disconnected. But if
the power is constant and just the cable is cut or removed will it still
keep the IP (without block/sync)?

I would but I currently don't have a cable modem to experiment with. I know
from experience that my DOCSIS modem will resync after reconnecting the
cable but does the modem recycle itself (drop the last known ip and start
over with verifying the MAC Address, etc.) during this procedure? Or does it
just handshake (block/sync) and continues on as if nothing happened because
it still has the last known ip in its memory?

Normally, DHCP gives out a lease good for a certain number of days. The
lease is good so long as the leasee remembers the ip address it was
assigned, i.e. no reset, regardless of wether the cable connection is active
or not.

Thanks, that's useful information. When it changes IP's does the modem lose
block/sync during that time? If it does does the modem recycle itself and go
through the motions of verifying the MAC address all over again?

cable modems usually remember their ip for a set amount of days. and when it
changes,it's nearly instant. if you were surfing the web when this happened,
you might have to refresh a webpage at the most.
