I would like to setup an FTP server behind my Linksys router (Cable modem on
the other side). My IT guys tell me that I may expose myself to potential
hackers if I open up the FTP port on the router. Any thoughts?

The FTP server is for personal use only when I'm traveling abroad!

If you don't allow public, anonymous access and have a LONG, complex
username and password, the risk is near zero. Just make sure the FTP
server DOESN'T have access to any kind of system files or programs
that COULD do something bad.....

You may want to look at a product called serv-u which will let you restrict
users pretty effectively. Also, ZoneAlarm will let you restrict what single
IP address or range of IP addresses are permitted.

Any time you open any access to your computer you have a security threat.
The goal is to strike a balance. We have often used a single purpose
machine (ex. FTP only) and placed it in an exposed area, usually a DMZ, for
this purpose.

Ya, Serv-U FTP is probably the best.

Why not use Microsoft's PPTP VPN?

It's easy to set up once you translate that incomprehensible wizard
babble. You can set it up to access other machines on your LAN if you
want, just like at home when you are directly connected.
