Whenever I disconnect the cable from my modem I have to call my ISP to
have them reset it on their server for me to access the internet.
Question, is their something that I can do locally to reestablish this
connection without calling the provider and having them reset it.
Thanks

You should be able to hook the cable back up to the modem, and THEN power
cycle the modem - this will cause it to start the process all over again.

OTOH, you're best off not connecting/disconnecting the cable from your modem
too often....

I have no idea why one would want to disco the RF line on a regular
basis, but if you must, power off the modem first, then disco the RF a
few mins later. When you recon the cable, do it first then power up the
modem maybe 5 mins later. You never said what brand/model of modem.

Hook the modem to a Cable router, and in the router you can hard code the
IP address and spoof the MAC address of the modem.

If he had a router, I suspect he would not have to disco anything, so
spoofing would not be needed. Saying 'auto ip/dns' works fine. Poster
'Mike' has not answered the Q yet of why he needs to disco the modem in
the first place.

In my original post I neglected to note a few items,;

1. I have 1 pc hooked to a Motorola SB 4220.
2. Reason for disconnect is that I occasionally do system maintenance
and it runs more efficentily with the modem disconnected. ie,
ScanDefrag does not recycle numerous times during the defrag segment.

Thanks Mike

Just disable the NIC in the config file and reboot. No NIC = no
internet. If you use USB, just pull that cable. In either of those
cases, the modem stays nicely connected to the host. No need to disco
the TV cable.

OR:
Mike could just press the green button on top of the SB4220, duh.
That disco's the modem from the 'puter while leaving the modem connected to
the ISPs headend.

Not entirely. Arp traffic will still be passed to the CPE connect to the
modem to facilitate lease renewals.

Jerry had mentioned in his post that I could just press the green
button on top of the SB4220. I tried this and it did not disable the
connection altogether, I still had to call the ISP and have them reset
it.

Don mentioned in his post to just disable the NIC in the Configuration
file and reboot the system. I don't understand how I would go about
doing this in Windows 98, can you please clarify on how to do this.

One other note, I run ScanDefrag 4.0 which when executed proceeds to
reboot the system and runs disk cleanup, scandisk, and defrag prior to
windows starting theirfore ensuring noting else is running when it is
executed. I find (ScanDefrag) more efficient then using the programs
provided by Microsoft.

Thank Mike

If your internet connection is causing the scandefrag problem then you
should be finding out what that traffic is, sounds like you have some
spyware running on your machine.

Delete every registry setting using regedit. This could take some time.

1.93. Cut that out, or you will be in peril.
