Several months ago we embarked on some network upgrades. (Amazing,
how long these things can take, isn't it?) One of the things I
intended to obtain at the time was a little box that could be
plugged in to a newly installed cable to tell me if the new cable
met specs or not. Naturally, since we intended to wire everything
with cat 5, I wanted to be able to test to cat 5 specs. I was
discouraged, at that time, from buying a tester because I was told
that none of them accurately read the cable characteristics. In
particular, I was told, all of them nearly always showed more NEXT
(near-end cross talk) than really existed.

So here's the question: is there a good (accurate) UTP cable tester
out there that's good to cat 5 (or beyond)?

Thanks,
Jim

I have an identical story. Our wiring vendor used a Pentascanner ( I
forget who makes it...) One networking vendor suggested that there were
no problems a Pentascanner will find that a lower-cost Category 3 tester
would also find. He leases one only when necessary. If anyone has any
feedback on teh Pentascanner, I'd also appreciate the info. I'd like to
use some *other* piece of equipment to randomly verify the results of our
vendor's efforts. Thanks in advance,

-Doug
