I've read things (now I can't find them) from which I infer that there is a
difference between Ethernet auto-negotiation and auto-sensing. However,
when I went looking foir references to auto-sensing I couldn't find
anything (other than auto-sensing cards). Is auto-sensing just another term
for auto-negotiation or is there a real difference? and if so what?

There is a real difference between the two

Autosensing just means looking for either Normal Link Pulses (10Base) or
Fast Link Pulses(100Base)
and do what the other side does as well. Duplex isn't detected, just
assumed it's half

Autonegotiation means the two sides negotiate with each other to get the
highest possible speed
10 or 100 and Full or Half Duplex. Highest ofcourse is 100Mb Full
duplex, lowest is 10Mb Half duplex
