Hello,

We are setting up a home LAN with 4 pc's, ethernet 100/10, a hub/switch and
a router. ISP has dynamic addressing and supports BOD, which we wish to use
for incoming phone calls on one channel. Don't want to use Wingate, prefer
a router. Understand problem with routers only working at 10 Mb. Have been
loking at Netgear 328, 3Com OfficeConnect 521, 3Com ISDN LAN modem,
Pipeline 75, Prestige 128 etc.

At least three pc's should be able to be on internet at the same time,
albeit with resulting decrease through-put.

Certain routers seem to use dynamic IP adressing within the LAN (Ascend),
others don't. DYN-NAT seems difficult with games.

Boys want to play Myth II and Quake over LAN and Internet, have gathered
that last patches are necessary to work with NAT.

What about Pointcast in SUA + DYN + NAT environment?

No servers, no telnet - but as an option, allowing a remote video
surveillance system (US Robot) that works on direct ISDN (not over Internet
via ISP) dial up towards the LAN would be fine. If this complicates
matters, skip it.

If price is not a great concern but function and ease of management is -
what should one pick? Netgear 328 seems to have many supporters on this
forum, also those doing multiplayer games. 3Com's LAN modem seems easy to
use and set up but what about playing games such as Quake and Myth?

Thanks for any advice

Erik and his father Jonas.

Quake I know works fine on all routers. They have addressed any problems
with dNAT. At least Quakeworld has...I don't know anyone who plays just
Quake much anymore. I have no idea about Myth II though...but I was
thinking about getting it to play. The best way to find out is to call the
game developers and ask them.

Hi,
I have been using the Netgeart RT328..their data performance is great but their
analog call support is iffy..currently I am having trouble calling a digital
mobile (cellular) number where it drops after two rings..
Anyway,,the RT328 has one feature which the 3com OCLM does not have - dial-in
capability which you indicated you may want for your surveillance camera. i
have not used that feature to comment on its perrformance but it IS there..
Bye

As for the voice call, I'm not sure which Router I would go with, but for
all the games and things just get an external ISDN , then build or find an
old 386-486 and install Linux w/ip masq it will do it all and in the end
will have a lot of ease to use and it is very inexpensive for future
upgrades of computers since ipmasq doesn't care how many are on the LAN. I
had 5 playing Quake2 all on different servers with 140 ping times and I was
using an ASCEND Pipeline 75
.
if you need further help in exacts then please email me I can help you as
much as possible take out the nospam of the email NOSPA...@redneq.ml.org
