Hi all

I've been trolling around the net looking for a guide to North
American ISDN (I live in Europe)

Unfortunately, even having tried the FAQs, im unable to find the
answer to my question, which is this;

What is the difference between Bellcore's NI1 and NI2 standards? How
are these different to AT&T 5ESS, and is it always necessary to
request from the Telco what switch they operate to ensure your ISPBX
will be compatible?

Thanking you all in advance for any pointers in the right direction,

Alan Mott

Too oversimplifed answer: NI2 is an upgraded NI1.

"Different to AT&T 5ESS" is not clear -- do you mean NI1/2 vs ATT
Custom, or NI1/2 on a 5ESS?

Thanks. I'd had it suggested to me that NI 1 was Basic Rate and NI2
was Primary Rate. I guess thats wrong.

Since posting Ive found stuff on the web that suggests, but doesnt
seem to state explicitly, that 5ESS is a switch/CO exchange. Is this
the case?

Can you point me to a site that gives an overview of ISDN protocols in
the US?
Many thanks again for your help.

Close - PRI was added by N-ISDN2, but there were a few other goodies as well
in the way of changes to BRI. Again I would refer you to my ISDN workbook at

www.veda-home.com/Blackshaw

I must warn you that if you attempt to print it on a colour laser or deskjet
to
have s[pare toner/cartridges on-hand :-)

Get the Bellcore document SR-NWT-002006 "National ISDN."
It's free.
It explains the migratory path of NI1-NI2-NI3 etc., and gives you the big
picture.

Wrong.

PRI was *standardized* for the U.S. LECs by NI2. Of course it existed
for almost a decade before this.

My aren't we picky? My statement was that it was "added" to National ISDN
in version 2, of course it existed before, and in several flavours as had
BRI - that's what "N-ISDN" was all about, no?

Many thanks to all of you who responded to my above cry for help. It
was all most useful.
