I am trying to install sybase (sybase-ase-11.0.3.3-1.i386.rpm) but keep having problems with either privilege or port numbers.

The problem appears when sybinit tries to bring up the server I get "SERVER ERROR: Failed to boot server 'SYBASE'. "
The following messages appear in errorlog. It does not matter what 'free' port number I choose I always get the same error.

00:1999/02/04 11:17:19.69 server Opening Master Database ...
00:1999/02/04 11:17:19.69 server Loading SQL Server's default sort order and character set
00:1999/02/04 11:17:19.69 kernel network name bulls, type ether, port 3333
00:1999/02/04 11:17:19.69 kernel ninit: bind, Cannot assign requested address
00:1999/02/04 11:17:19.69 kernel ninit: All master network listeners have failed. Shutting down.
00:1999/02/04 11:17:19.69 kernel ueshutdown: exiting

I can bring the server up as root but then I am unable to attach to it using isql. I then get

Operating-system error:
Network is unreachable
DB-LIBRARY error:
Unable to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not exist.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Just off hand, the default port for Sybase is 7100 on Linux. I am not
sure what normally sits at 3333, but there may be a conflict. Try
modifying the interfaces file (take a backup first).

P.S. I am no expert on this, but I like to play ... ;-)

You are farther than me....I can't even get the rpm to install? Got any ideas?
I'm getting dependency problems....saying I don't have the right version of
files to install the ASE rpm....I'm pretty good at this stuff....but this one
is stumping me.

In article <19990204072401...@ng-ch1.aol.com>,
Did you install the glibc-2.0.6-1 rpm?

My guess is that you don't have recent enough glibc libraries.

I have tried ports 7100, 7110, 7112, 3123, 3124, 3127 and many, many more. The messages are different if the port is reserved.
I am also using verion 2.0.36-0.7 of the kernel as well. That is version 5.2 of red hat.

What was the error message? Wasn't it more specific than that?

Maybe the version of Linux you are using is not recent enough.

Hey dude...I'm really shocked at the support of this newsgroup. This has been
really helpful. I didn't have the glibc libraries installed (I finally
installed the most current one)...and now the stuff is up an running like a
champ (well...sybinit is running anyway <grin>). Thanks again.

What user are you running the server as?
sybase, root, other user? Maybe involves stuff with permissions...etc...

The problem arose because I tried to give my machine a name other than localhost.
The interaces file had the correct machine name but I did not have the machine name aliased to 127.0.0.1
in my hosts file. It was aliased to a fixed IP address I use for a ppp connection to my ISP.
Aliasing the machine name to both IP adresses seems to get rid of the problem.
